An Apple A Day...

So I had to do something green to complete my own premier challenge for The Artist's Play Room this week. I found myself thinking about fruit, I'm not sure if this is because I'm on a diet and fruit with all it's sugar is the first thing to eliminate or whether it's because Spring is here and I know we're only a month or so away from the West Coast blooming with fresh fruit like strawberries. At first I drew up a pear of long necked pears but didn't feel inspired to finish them, I'll probably use my new Prismacolor markers to flesh out their beauty, but that's not what I wanted to do today. I wanted to play with my new Faber-Castell Albrecht Durer watercolor pencils, in all their (120 piece) splendiforous color! So I did.

I decided to do an apple. Not just any old apple though, I figure if I was gonna draw out an apple, I better make it more difficult and unique. I mean, I did an apple & orange weeks ago. I wanted to do something really challenging and interesting. Here's what I came up with...

I'm thrilled with how it came out! I was surprised to find that the inside of a green apple has green shadows! As I said, I used my new Faber-Castell watercolor pencils to color the sketch. Oh, and I used one of my new Graphitint pencils (graphite pencil lead with a tint of color added, so cool) to do the shadow. The inside flesh of the apple is cream and the lightest green and a warm gray. The outside peal is like more than a half a dozen greens plus a creamy ivory pushed HARD to  smooth out the greens underneath to do the highlight. I also erased the highlight a little too so it was smoother and the pencil crayon "pushed" into the crevices of the paper. The leaf is a wholly different set of greens, I must have like 16 or so greens! And they combine to make even more colors. It was such fun getting the core right, to make it actually look eaten.
