Sketching: Ball Of String

So I was hemming and hawing about doing a drawing for an art challenge given by Inspiration Avenue. You see, I'm a new member there (I've been a member for about a month). Embarrassingly, I haven't done a challenge to date and we put a new one up every Monday morning. I decided that this week I would definitely get my butt in gear and do whatever challenge given this week. Then I read the challenge... Oh God, how does one draw TEXTURE??!?

I looked at our shaggy rug and shivered in fear. I thought of all the things with texture, hair, fabric, carpet, crumpled paper, rope... all of these put the fear of God into me. I don't have much confidence in my freehand sketching ability. I don't really know why I'm so meek about my abilities.

I decided to just jump in and draw something. I chose to create a ball of string. So I got my favorite soft H pencil out and started sketching. I was shocked with the outcome. I guess I'm better than I thought. Now I'm going to go sketch a pine cone, an apple core, an old rope, an egg shell and a peanut shell. Hehehe. I'm on a roll! Look at me go!

I'll be back in a couple days. I have a macro flower to blog about... then cool tools, then some amazing artists... and so on, and so on...

  1. It's nice to finally see you at an IA challenge, Jenn. I really like your art, and am glad you chose to join in the fun this week. I really admire how well you draw. This is a very textural drawing that makes me just want to reach out and play with it! Lovely.

  2. Jennifer:

Your ball of string shows much skill. I can feel the texture. I think you fulfilled the assignment admirably.

  3. Yay! Glad you're playing this week, Jenn! Wow, I think it must be difficult to create texture in a drawing. No paint or other mediums to build up the surface... You did an amazing job! I can "feel" the roughness of the twine :)

    1. Awww, maggie, you flatter me. Thanks so much for the effusive compliments. It took me almost the whole week to get the confidence to even pick a subject. Then I found I loved the effect I was achieving so I did several more subjects! Hey, I discovered I can really sketch! Hehehe.

    1. Thanks Dianne,
I was thinking of doing several sketches (I did another last night of a pine cone) and offering them as cards after printing them up either myself or with moo.com. I also thought the originals could be either postcards in a sleeve or see through envelope or just offer them as mini art. Do you find your ACEO's sell? Thanks for the compliments, sweetie! I'm making my way over to IA soon, slogging my way through email!

  9. Brilliant drawing - well done you for facing the fear. I find, if I'm not careful, fear can zap huge amounts of my time and energy that could've been spent on creating art or writing. Sometimes I conquer these fears and create with freedom and happiness. But there are days when these fears have me convinced that its not worth me even starting. That's why I try and encourage people to create with no expectations and just for the joy of it as often as they can. For me it helps me to know that I can create the worst piece of art or piece of writing and it won't matter. That its not always the end result but the act of creating that brings joy. But like I said - those fear demons can interfere some days :-)

Enjoy being part of the IA team. They are a fab bunch to work with and befriend.

    Kat :-)

  10. I saw the topic was texture... thought about all the hard work involved and poured a glass of wine instead... your ball of twine is awesome... think you did enough hard work there for both of us...xx
