I'm Stargazing

Ok, not exactly stargazing, more like stargazer. Actually exactly like stargazer. I decided to do a little thinking outside the box for my own challenge and do a tongue-in-cheek tweaking of the theme. This week I'm doing a Stargazer lily. In fact, I'm "cheating" even more as I've just been waaaay to busy this week to do anything else. SO, I decided to show you some old stargazers I did several years ago. ;o)

My thinking was if you're stargazing then you are a stargazer and a stargazer is also a lily, tada!! Now I can do a flower for my challenge instead of actually doing something celestial, hehehe. The stargazer (painting) I was going to show, I actually started over a year ago when I penciled in the macro of the flower and started the background. I then promptly put it away, not willing to try to accomplish painting it, not knowing if I could paint it successfully. Well, it doesn't matter now, because when I went to finish the painting last week, the frisket I had left on to protect the white areas had somehow melted into the paper and the whole thing was a mess. I knew I didn't have enough time to start again so I came up with this innovative cheat idea.

Several years ago, before I was painting at all, I owned my own designer wedding cake business. I used the best baker in town who provided me with the very basic cake layers. I took those and did all the stacking, decoration, icing work etc. I made dimensional flowers in the new style, not the Wilton method but more real looking. This style is what you see on the celebrity cakes now. I was inspired by a guest Martha Stewart had on her show. That's when the business was born. 

At the time, I was trying to fulfill my need to create, but later (nearly eight years later!) I realized I just wasn't happy because all I wanted to do was paint. It was a difficult decision to shut down the business, I was good at flowers but I believed I had to follow my own bliss. And hey, maybe someday I'll teach the flower making, I know people want to learn it and experts in the process are fairly rare in Canada. That's something for the future. But now, I thought I'd show you some of the stargazer lilies I made for cakes over the years. Then I thought, "hey, that's not fair to the other lilies!", so I added a few of the other colors of lilies I've done, for you to see.

What I did when choosing a lily was I asked the bride what color she wanted her lily in, then I did research to find the perfect one so then she'd have an actual name of an actual flower that her new husband could buy for her, either cut flowers or a beautiful garden plant to remind them of their special day. I prided myself in NOT producing non-flowers, lol. No blue roses, EVER. :o)

Teach Me Thet Digi Technique Blog Hop (Part 2)

This is the second post from me for "Teach Me Thet Digi Technique" Blog Hop put on by Lissa Marie of SoManyCrafts.com. Hopefully you read and enjoyed my first tutorial in this hop on how to add HTML code to make your pretty new photoshopped social media buttons functional on your blog. Today I'm going to show you how to make your own blog button/badge that is actually copy/pastable by your readers who are so inclined to add your badge to their site's sidebar. Of course, this same tutorial would work just as well to make any kind of badge or button. I've made several for my own site, my official blog badge, my Artist's Play Room badge, my "You've Been Featured" badge for the series on interviews with extraordinary artists and I also made a badge to help spread the word about The Butterfly Project put on by Holocaust Museum Houston.

In this tutorial I'll also tell you how to add a few cool functions to any linked picture or a blog badge. We'll learn how to make a statement show up when you mouse over your picture/badge. We'll also add the very useful function where when the picture or badge is clicked, the site it points to opens in a new tab or window!! This is such a useful feature because then your reader isn't taken off your site, the new site that the badge or picture points to opens in a totally new window or tab, still leaving your blog open.

Here we go...

First Let's Create A Basic Blog Button:
Use a paint program or Photoshop and make a picture that looks like you want your blog button/badge to look. I would recommend making it 150 x 150 pixels, they fit on blogs the best (although any shape is actually ok). So let's pretend I just created my new blog badge for my Blogging 101 series. If you don't own Photoshop or something similar, you can use the free Pixir editor to make a blog button, just upload layers of bits you want to amalgamate into a button then add text. 

Now we have the image of our blog button but we have to make a URL with this image. I use Skitch but it's for Mac users only, so many of you will use something like Tinypic so that's what I'll use this time. We therefore go to the uploader (Tinypic) site which will look like this...


...and we choose the button image that's on our computer. The file type is an image we're uploading and I leave the resize as default. Click "Uload Now". This is what you'll see when the uploader is done.


Beside the above info you'll see the image you just uploaded (here it would be the blogging 101 image). What we want is the Direct Link at the bottom, copy that URL. Now we want to add the HTML stuff to make it a clickable linked image. (after we do that we can add both cool features and make it copy/pastable)

So right now we have just the URL of our button image which looks like this. (just so you understand, if you put this URL link into your address bar above and clicked enter on your keyboard, your browser would go to the image of my blogging 101 button. Try it if you want... I'll wait, lol.)


See? Ok, now let's make this URL an actual clickable blog button...
If you remember from my Part 1 of this series, we want to first tell Blogger that we have an image. So we do this...


Then we tell Blogger where we want this image to point to. Let's make the Blogging 101 image point to my Part 1 blog post, the URL of that post is http://www.justaddwatersilly.com/2012/03/blogging-101-part-one.html.

So, this is what it would look like...


This is the most basic blog button. You would see the image below and when you clicked it you would go to my Blogging 101 Part 1 blog post. Go ahead, click the image, I'll wait...


Did you notice that when you clicked the button you were taken to a new tab or window? Cool feature, huh? Wanna know how to do that? Yes? OK! Here's how...

We want to add an extra piece of code right after the href= part, and the code we want to add is this...


So now the code for the blog button looks like this...


Ok, lets add one more cool tweak. What if when you hovered your cursor over the blog button it said something, like text showed up? (this is called mousing over, just so you know, lol) Here's the code tweak, it goes again right after the href= part, just like the target="_blank" above. The actual code we're adding will be title="Click Here to go to my Blogging 101 blog post!".

So the whole blog button code with the two new code tweaks will look like this...


REMEMBER: there is a space after each code tweak and DON'T FORGET to add both the open and close quotes where I showed you, if you forget just one it gets all screwed up!! If you always think of code stuff happening in pairs you'll be golden!

REMINDER: From the Part 1 lesson, you can add height and width functionality to our blog button which allows you to size the image to whatever you want to, and it looks like this... (Just in case you forgot, lol, and you can change the height/width to anything, changing the size/shape of the image.)


Ok, we have the cool blog button with extra functionality. NOW we want to add a text box underneath our button so guests can copy/paste our blog button code and add it to THEIR site. This lets us control how our button works on other people's site because WE provide the code for them to copy/paste.

So, here we go!

What we want to do is actually make a text box, just like all the little boxes you've been reading the code in above. You see, if you add code without putting it in a text box, Blogger will actually DO what the code says. So, instead of seeing the code for centering your picture you'll just see that picture centered. Frustrating, I know. But by putting all the code into a text box Blogger doesn't DO what it says, it just shows exactly what you typed in a little copy/pastable box. Now that we're clear as mud, let's continue.

A text box is actually called "text area" and what we're gonna do is basically put our blog button code BETWEEN "text area" tags. Like this... (I had to take a photo of this because when you put textarea code in a textarea box it does it twice, LOL. So this is what the actual code will look like finished, then I'll explain EACH PIECE, OK?)

The opening tag < with the  textarea after it tells Blogger we're creating a text box. Please notice the closing tag that looks similar at the end of all the type. It's just like the opening tag < but with the / added to indecate closing this tag.

* Next, we have the cols= , this tells Blogger just how wide in pixels the text box will be. For an average blog button I use 25 pixels as a good width.

* Next we see name= , this is just naming the textarea, it's not important, just pick what you want. For a blog button I use "link to site". 

* Now we see readonly= , I'm guessing that this makes it impossible to type in the text box, just put it in, it certainly won't hurt anything!

* Rows= refers to the number of rows that the textarea is going to show. If the picture of the textarea code above was actually a text box it would be 3 rows. (three rows of code show). On average, for an average blog button I use 4 rows, the text box allows you to scroll down to copy/paste the whole code anyway so you don't have to show ALL the code at once!

* Finally, we get to the actual code that will show in our text box under our blog button image. As you can see, it's just like the actual code for our blog button (although I forgot to add the title= , forgive me, lol)

So, the COMPLETE CODE for the blog button image + the copy/pastable textarea under it has to be amalgamated together. First, we want to show the blog button in completion, with all the cool tweaks, remember the code looks like this...


Now we have to add the textarea under the blog button image, so we add this code (below) to the code above...

So the FINAL CODE all put together looks like this...

Please take note of the little extras I added to make the button centered etc. We need center tags around the WHOLE code so the ENTIRE blog button + text box is centered in your sidebar. Then we also want when someone copy/pastes our code from the text box, when they add it to their site, the button that appears is also centered. That's why there are center tags around both the entire code and within the code.

I also added the line "(Copy/Paste into your sidebar HTML/Javascript Gadget!)" in between the blog button image and the text box below it. This text is there just to help the viewer know what to do. Finally, you'll notice the br / surrounded by the open and close tags < and >. This just adds a line break between the blog button image above and the text & text box below. It just puts the text below it on it's own line. Please note that there is a space after the br, then the / , OK?

Blogging 101 - Part Eight

This month's my Blogging 101 series is actually also part of a cool Blog Hop put on by Lissa Marie of SoManyCrafts.com. The hop is several days long and each participant is showcasing a technique blog post. (I'm actually doing two days in a row, today and tomorrow, my post was that long, lol.) In this exciting blog hop you'll be able to go to several blogs and learn how to use Photoshop to make your own social media & blog buttons, how to code those buttons so they're functional on your site and how to make your very own blog button that your friends can grab! You'll learn how to use digital stamps and pictures in your artwork and even how to manipulate them before printing. You'll also learn about cutting tools like the Cricut and Sillouette and different techniques to improve your artwork. 

 My first post for "Teach Me That Digi Technique" Blog Hop will use the social media buttons that you make using Photoshop or another editor and add HTML code so they are functional on your blog. Lissa's post yesterday taught you how to make your own buttons using Photoshop, click here if you missed that tutorial. Tomorrow, I'll be showing you how to make your very own copy and paste-able blog button that your friends can grab and display on their blogs! (for those of you following my Bogging 101 series, this is Part 8, parts 1-7 can be had by clicking here. Go forth and beautify your blog people!)

Who knew I'd get to Part Eight?? I'm thrilled that so many people like this series and I'm also thrilled that you all find it easy to follow! Of course if you'd like to grab my button and proudly display it on your own sidebar, making clicking through to Blogging 101 posts easy peasy that would be great. Hint, hint, ;o)

So, let me teach you how to add Social Media buttons to your sidebar, kinda like the ones I have right there --->  We'll add and Twitter button, a Pinterest button, an Email Me button, a Bloglovin' button and a Facebook button. Next time, in a future blogging 101 I'll teach you how to burn your feed so we can use what we learned here and add a Feedburner button and a Subscription button.

So, here we go!
First we need pretty little buttons. I find it's easier to purchase them off of Etsy (though you may have just made your own using Lissa's tutorial!). They're ridiculously inexpensive so I've found it easier to purchase the color and shape you want. I also found it difficult to find a set of free buttons that had all the social media options I wanted to use. You may not have that problem so it's worth it to see if you can find free buttons on the internet. Here are two Etsy shops I've used:
  1. Moxitonic - general blog buttons for $2 or upgrade to custom for an extra $5
  2. Twenty Three Oh One - custom blog buttons for $6
We'll use buttons that I've purchased previously for this tutorial. Let's start with a simple one. We want a Twitter button to go to our Twitter page when clicked. First you have to upload your button so it has a URL. You can use any picture uploader you like. I use Skitch but it's just for Macbook computers. Once you have the URL for your button then you can add the functionality.

My Twitter button's URL is:

Now we build the functionality in. If you haven't read Blogging 101 Part 2 (all about making your own blog button), I suggest you read that before going further. First, let's find our personal Twitter page. Go to twitter.com and sign in if you're not already. Click on your name beside your avatar. This brings you to the page where people would click to follow you. Grab the URL out of the address bar of your browser. My twitter personal page is:

https://twitter.com/#!/addwatersilly

So what we want to do is connect the button and the twitter page. We use similar code as we did for making the blog buttons... This is what it looks like.

This will look and work like this... (go ahead, click it!)





If you want your social media button to open in a new tab or window when clicked then add the target="_blank" optional function just after the twitter page URL. (taught in the Blogging 101 part 2)

Use the above steps to also make your Facebook, Pinterest and Bloglovin' buttons. For finding your personal Facebook page go to Facebook and sign in if you aren't already. When you get into Facebook just click on your name and you'll be on your front page. Then grab the URL again, it'll look something like this:

http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=57952750

For Pinterest, once again, sign in and click on your name. Grab the URL of your personal page, it'll look something like this:

http://pinterest.com/addwatersilly/

These links to your pages go just where Twitter's link went, just replace one with the other. REMEMBER, don't delete any quotation marks or your button won't function!

Bloglovin' is a little different. Sign in if you haven't already. Click "Account" in the upper right hand corner which brings a drop down menu. Choose "Blogs By Me" then when your stats page comes up click your blog title. This page is the one you want to grab the link from... it looks like this:

http://www.bloglovin.com/en/blog/3485371/just-add-water-silly/follow

For each of the above you obviously have to upload their buttons using a picture uploader like you did for the Twitter button. All of the tweaks that you can add to your blog button  you can add to your social media buttons, like mouse over text and height/width changes. See Blogging 101 Part 2 for those instructions.

Our last social media button we want to make functional is the "Email Me" button. This takes a slightly different set of codes. First, upload your "Email Me" button with the picture uploader and grab it's URL. Here's mine:

It looks like this:



Now we need the code to add the functionality to this button. We want it to open the clicker's email program and add our email address in the "To" section. The code looks like this:

The pink section is the slight change to get the email program to open. Instead of putting our Facebook or Twitter page URL right after the href=  we instead put "mailto:YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS". Don't Forget the quotes around the the pink part or it won't work. I coded the button above so you can see what happens when you click it. Go ahead, I'll wait for you! :o)

Notice that I've added the small tweaks I mentioned above, the target="_blank" opens the email program in a new window and the title="Write what you want here" will show when you mouse over the social media button. Once again, DON'T forget the quotes nothing works without the quotes!

Once you have all your buttons finished you want to add the code to an HTML/Javascript gadget in your sidebar. I suggest putting your social media buttons as close to the top as you can, maybe right under your "About Me" section. So, we want to put the code for each button, just as you wrote it, into the gadget. If you want them all to be centered then put <center> before all the code and </center> after all the code. This blogging 101 tip and it's explanation can be found in Part 1. If you want them to line up horizontally then just put the code in one after the other, they'll line up automatically. If, on the other hand, you'd like your buttons to line up right under one another then on the next line after each piece of code put <br />  It'll look like this in the gadget:

The <br /> will put the next button on a new line and if you've added the <center></center> around all the code then all buttons will be centered under one another. This would be perfect for buttons like this one:

Putting these buttons one under another would look awesome on a blog. NOTICE that directly after the <br there is a space before the /> (Oh, and I got the button from ShabbyBlogs.com button section)

That's about it for this section of how to improve and beautify your blog. Next time maybe I'll teach you how to burn your feed and set up email subscriptions.

The Big FEATURING Giveaway!!

This week's theme is "Celestial/Stargazing". I thought we could celebrate the beautiful sky. When we moved into our apartment I was pleasantly surprised to find that the previous tenant had added glow in the dark stars in little and big dipper style all over the ceiling. It's surprising how comforting they are to look up to for the few minutes until I fall asleep. I know this may stretch some of you to get creative but I added a couple extra ideas below. Really, you can also let the theme really make you think outside of the box. Have fun!

This is going to be a busy, busy upcoming week here at Just Add Water Silly. I'm also participating in a blog hop. Starting Sunday, there will be tutorials daily from one of the participants of the hop, I'll be doing a new Blogging 101 and also (in another post the next day) teaching how to make your own blog button for those who don't know how.
