Artist's Play Room #29

This week was really exciting to watch in The Artist's Play Room. The theme being "You Choose" really allowed everyone to be creative and do whatever tickled their fancy. This gave us a plethora of wonderfully different and creative art, I'll have to do this theme again in the new year, I can see that everyone liked the freedom of it. Anyway, let me show you just how totally creative you all have been this week, as we move into a new season. (Oh, and welcome to all the newbies who have emailed me in the past few weeks to introduce themselves. It's so nice to hear from you all!!

Terri has done a piece of
art about her new idea
called "the Way-word girls".
She wants to inspire young
girls. Great idea Terri!
Bonnie has made a
journal page encouraging
us to enjoy our life. Great
idea!
Stefanie has drawn a falling
star that she wants to wish
upon. She's wants to
remember to dream.
Welcome Stefanie!
Arnoldo has done a religious
journal page with a Biblical
quote for this week's APR.
Thanks for participating.
I am so in your corner, Mo,
starting to do Christmas
cards now it so smart!! Then
you're not overwhelmed. You
can also use the stove's burner
to emboss, don't get too close!
Parul has done these stunning
three dimensional face masks.
They are so tribal and organic.
Great job and welcome!
Catharina has done a totally
stunning sunset painting for
her son who is moving out.
What a beautiful present!
I'm loving this painting by
Andrea. We have a koi pond
outside the apartment and I
now have the privilege of
feeding them on the weekend.
Rita has rendered us a beautiful
double layout journal entry,
with flowers and color riotous
all over the pretty page!
Trace, I'm loving this piece
as I'm not totally challenging
you to a game of, well, you
choose!! Backgammon, Yahtzee,
Gin or fast scrabble, hehehe.
Alice has done some stunning
pieces using watercolor and
salt technique, very cool!
I can't wait to try this.
Darla has drawn one half
of a face from a magazine
cutting. What a terrific
technique idea and great way
to sharpen your skills.
Beautifully done Darla.
Linda has rendered a really
stunning piece on the view
of the shore where she likes
to go and visit. Love it.
Gloria painted a sunset she saw
earlier this summer. I find this
truly stunning. Maybe some day
I'll be this good.
Minn earlier did a stunning
painting of this invisible
woman. I was thrilled to
hear she was painting her
again. So, beautiful!
Currie has used one of her
photos and photoshop to
create this sweet sentimental
piece of artwork.
Victoria has used photoshop as
Currie did above, isn't amazing
the things that can be done
with digital manipulation?
It stymies me.
Alice has been very
creative this week so
she sent in a second
link, gorgeous!
Sandee has created
this 3D dress with a
great saying, I love
the dimensional
aspect of this.
Mary has started using a small moleskine and
she leaves it in her kitchen just in case she's inspired.
She drew her kitchen, really innovative!

This week's theme is "BOTANICAL". This theme was done selfishly, lol. I really wanted to start drawing in my moleskine so this is a perfect way to get me to finally put a mark in it!! Please feel free to interpret this theme any way your heart desires, no need to actually do the study of a plant. Here are some fun ideas...

An Artist's Favorite Toys

I got the pleasure of purchasing my mom a gift this last week. Years ago she was a successful oil painter. I remember our house always had her spectacular, large paintings hanging on the walls. Seeing her talent and that beautiful art is what inspired me to want to be an artist. Scroll forward thirty years, she is showing interest in painting again but the rigors of oil paint isn't what she wants. She doesn't want the smell throughout her apartment and the drying time is seriously prohibitive. So, Golden heavy body acrylics it is!

Off to Dick Blick we go (ok, I opened my computer, work with me here!). We lamented, drooled, dreamed and puzzled over Golden paint colors, palettes, paint holders and all things painterly. What fun we had for a whole week, planning and strategizing, reading reviews and thinking COLOR. Finally she settled on twenty-two glorious colors, it took some convincing but finally I won the war that she didn't just have to get the basics, she could get some cool, interesting premixed colors too. Like titanium buff and quinacridone magenta. She's old school, you mix your own, but now there's something like nearly one hundred colors of heavy body Golden acrylics to choose from!! The prices were quite reasonable so I sold her on the idea of choosing a few unique colors that she really loved and may have trouble mixing herself. We purchased all the colors in the 2 oz tube size except black and white, we figured as she decides on her favorites we can upgrade to the larger jars. Here's all the puurrrty colors that arrived a few days ago!

I also bought her a cool palette that's nonstick so the paint peels off and a storage system called a Possum palette that keeps paint wet so it's not wasted from one painting session to another. I spoiled her, I love doing that. I can't wait to see what she produces and since she has owed me a large painting for years (she destroyed all her art when I was a young teen, it seriously distressed me!!), I'm definitely gonna collect my pound of flesh, so to speak, lol. ;o) I've got my wall space all picked out.

This week's APR was "You Choose" and since I've been thinking all things paint, I decided to draw up my own supplies. I was inspired by one of Tracey Fletcher King's drawings that she did of her tubes of paint (come to think of it, I think they were goldens, hehehe). I use Holbein Artist watercolors and I love their vibrancy, so here's my love letter to my art supplies.
Holbein's & Microns, this artist's staples.Thank you Trace, for helping me loosen up
my style! You rock as an art teacher. :o)
One last note to all my friends who blogged, talked, tweeted, facebooked and generally shouted from the rooftops about FEATURING magazine and it's new issue... A sincere thank you comes directly from the Editor-In-Chief and owner, Marit Barensten. She was truly touched that my friends in the blog world came through to help herald the coming of Issue 2, the coolest art magazine on the planet. If you haven't perused this awesome and inspiring international english language art magazine, then you're really missing something. Go over and read all about it here. Both Issue 1 and Issue 2 are available and there's a giveaway going on as we speak until October 30 for those of you who order issue 2. (you can win one of five copies of the new book on art journaling, click here to read all about it!)

Best,

Featured Artist - Kim Collister

I'm a little overdue to have a Featured Artist, although I'm betting you'll find this unique and special artist worth the wait. I am featuring Kim Collister this month, she's a personal friend who I was privileged to meet over at Inspiration Avenue's blog when I was a member there. I find her multi-media collagist, dimensional art so intriguing and inspiring. Her pieces always make me feel joyful and like I want to go jump into a new art project so I can play with color. Her art reminds me to nurture that childlike wonder that fuels my love of color. I'm in love with her pieces and I know you'll fall in love with them too.

Kim is such a joyful and exuberant human being who inspires all around her to see the positive side of life. Every time I hear from her I'm buoyed in spirit. There's something about her aura that imbues everything she touches and I'm so happy to call her a friend. Here's the lively interview I did with her several months ago.

Jenn: How did you get started making art?

Kim: When I was a young child I remember always making something out of nothing. I am pretty sure my artistic abilities came from my dad. He had another profession, but I remember sitting at the table with him watching him draw. People were always asking him to do something, he was very talented artistically and design wise. I followed in his footsteps growing up. Creating art was my way of contributing through school, for friends and family and just enjoying my creative abilities. I did not really start making art and pursuing it for myself until my husband became ill in 2000. It was then that I needed a creative outlet and I began making ACEO cards, and started selling on Ebay. In 2009 my son and daughter began telling me about ETSY. It was in November of that year that I opened my shop IMGIRL.

Jenn: Do you sell your work, where?

Kim: Before my ETSY shop, I started selling art greeting cards in a couple artsy boutiques about an hour from where I live. After my ETSY shop opened, I branched out selling my art creations to a shop locally and one in Maine. I also sell through private commissions, craft art fairs when time permits and charity fund raisers. And of course, I sell through my shop IMGIRL on ETSY.

Jenn: What is your process in creation? (do you like plein air best or use of a photograph, or your own imagination, or follow where the art supplies take you?)

Kim: LOL, there is no process to my creations. It is strictly my vivid imagination. I definitely follow where my art supplies take me. My process if you call it that begins with collecting supplies. My eye is always looking and dissecting images and my brain is processing what I can do with them. I do a lot of collage work, which I love, so photos, pictures and any paper items always catch my eye. For me, part of the joy of creating is in gathering my supplies. I love to have a menagerie of supplies in front of me when I begin. So for me, the story and creative process really begins with lots of supplies and some quiet moments when I can get them. I love not knowing where I will begin or where it will end.

Jenn: What are your favorite artist's supplies?

Kim: When I can’t find something I really need or there is just no substitute, I can always depend on “Blick Art Supplies” (Links in my sidebar!) and I just order it. Things I have ordered that I love and always have on hand are: Tim Holtz alcohol inks, Washi tape, Gesso, Copic markers, Neocolor II crayons, Faber-Castill Pitt art pens, glitter glue, and paint pens. Always a black and a white paint pen.

But most of the time, I use cheap acrylics and supplies I find at local craft stores like Michaels or Hobby Lobby. I love finding ways to use what I have available to me. Rather than throwing out, for instance, the cardboard pad that the frozen pizza sits on, I have used the cardboard for my art creations in postcards and tags. The plastic frozen food entrée containers make excellent containers to mix paint.

(This piece below is my absolute favorite, it's so expressive and just inspires me so
much to continue to be an artist. Kim is such an amazingly talented person!)

Jenn: How does making a spectacular piece make you feel?

Kim: I always surprise myself when I make anything. I have no formal art training and I just let my imagination and my heart work through my hands and guide me. When my creation is finished, I am like a little kid going “Look what I did”. I am most definitely the best fan of my own work. I always try to do what I love, so I am almost always happy with it. If it doesn’t sell, then I'm pretty satisfied with seeing it in my studio and looking at it myself. When I make something I love, it just keeps a smile on my face. When someone else loves it too? Well, it just doesn’t get any better than that.

Jenn: What do you do with a less than steller piece, do you rework until you're happy?

Kim: This is a hard question. On many occasions, I have started down a path with a piece and then wondered where I was going with it? I can almost always re-work it. I am almost always happy with my work. I prefer the beauty of imperfection rather than a perfected piece. I'm not sure if that is ignorance or just the signature of an artist. The works of any artist is certain to not to please everyone or even to be understood by everyone. I mean, look at Picasso, what was he thinking when he got up some days? As long as the piece is something I am pleased with, then it's steller to me and a signature of my art. Maybe one day, someone will be trying to figure out what the heck I was thinking!

Jenn: Is there anything else you'd like me to include about you or your art? (anything you'd like to elaborate on would be greatly helpful!)

Kim: Art has been such a process in my life. It has opened up so many avenues for me and has just made me look at the world around me and people more in depth, not just surface quality. I am more grateful, for everything. I have always been an incorrigible optimist, I always think I can. I have met so many strong incredible women and artists through my blog, just like yourself, (awww, thank you Kim!!) and I always learn something from each one of them. IMGIRL without wings… that's me. I have learned that if you try instead of waiting for things to happen, you will find that the things you think you can do, ...you actually can can. The things you can’t do, you learn from, and the places you can go are only up to you. Thank you Jenn, it has really been an honor for me to be a featured artist on your blog!
Hand-sewn Altered Art JournalAlso comes with book tags!
Kim, it was an honor interviewing you and peeking a little behind the "curtain". Thanks for being so honest and giving us new ways of seeing the world. I really enjoyed seeing your art and learning how you make such unique and beautiful pieces. I'm sure both collage and non-collage artists alike will find your process and art so interesting and intriguing. It's been such a pleasure knowing you.
